SHEPHERDSTOWN — Injury-riddled Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania still had do-most-everything field general KJ Riley as its inspirational and passing leader, in its game with Shepherd University on Saturday. And in a match that was so even it took two overtimes to finally decide the winner that was just enough.
The upstart and motivated Huskies had the late-game heroics of quarterback/punter/place kicker Riley and his favorite target, Jerry Griffen-Batchelor, and eventually scored TDs in both overtimes to finally leave Monte Carter Field with upraised arms that fully signified a 27-21 win in the PSAC East Division game that had the announced crowd of 5,422 always trying to guess what was coming next from the perplexing teams.
Both teams will now carry 5-4 overall records into the season’s final two games.
Riley completed 22 of his 36 passes, for a career-high four scores and 302 yards. His average completion went for over 13 yards per catch. He was forced into even more duties because of the multiple injuries to Bloomsburg’s place kickers and punters. Riley handled all of Bloomsburg’s kicking chores, using his left foot to try extra points and a field goal and punting four times. Griffen-Batchelor totaled 11 receptions for 157 yards and two TDs.
A never-ending stream of penalties marred the efforts of both teams, with touchdowns and field goals being negated by infractions. The visiting Huskies were flagged nine times and the Rams seven times for 70 yards.

Shepherd, which generally found itself trailing for much of the pleasant afternoon, relied almost exclusively on its very short passes and its running game that netted it 118 rushing yards where Jordan Barnett gained 76 yards on 13 carries and scored once. The Rams averaged just six yards a catch on its short, sideline-to-sideline throws to receivers, who were supposed to get necessary running yardage after any reception.
Bloomsburg’s spirited and gang-tackling defense had Ryan D’Ambra with 12 tackles, Ron Long with nine and Ryan Woertz with nine.
Harold O’Neal led the Shepherd defense in tackles.
It was Shepherd’s final home game, leaving its finish showing dates at East Stroudsburg and Seton Hill.
The upbeat Warriors of East Stroudsburg have lost only once in a season that sees it at 8-1 overall and in the running for a possible NCAA Division II playoff berth.

Coming off a 45-0 blanking of Shippensburg, the Warriors had quarterback Sean McTaggart throw for 415 yards and four TDS on 23-of-31 completions. East Stroudsburg has lost only to unbeaten Kutztown this season.
Game time is set for 1:05 p.m. and will see Shepherd trying to shed an unusual two-game losing streak — now, carrying four losses for the first time in Coach Ernie McCook’s seven seasons.
