SHEPHERDSTOWN — Opening eyes all over the length and breadth of the far-flung Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the Shepherd University men’s basketball team defeated both undefeated Seton Hill and undefeated California on back-to-back nights on the home floors of the two western Pennsylvania schools.

Last Friday in Greensburg, Pa., the Rams stopped Seton Hill, 70-62, mostly riding the 24 points of Chase Paar and a vast 39-28 edge in rebounds.

Paar was joined in double figures by Jarod Robinson, who had 13 points. Marcus Banks scored nine and both Brody Davis and Carson Poffenberger had eight points in the Shepherd take-notice win.

Seton Hill entered the game with a 5-0 record.

The Rams converted 12-of-16 free throws, while the faltering Griffins made just 8-of-16 free throws.

The next night in California, the Rams disregarded a halftime deficit to chase down and then defeat the nationally ranked Vulcans, 66-61.

California entered the night with a 6-0 record and being ranked No. 4 in the country.

Shepherd doubled its first half scoring total, by outpointing the hosts 44-35 in the fast-paced second half.

As was the case the night before in besting Seton Hill, Shepherd outrebounded the host team 45-39 and was more effective at the free throw line. The Rams, now 4-2 overall, went 14-for-17 at the foul line while Vulcans were 9-for-13 as a team.

Robinson totaled 17 points and three other Rams scored in double figures. Davis was able to add 15 points, Paar had 11 and Banks added his 10 points. Robinson was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

Dona Whitehead scored 22 points, as the Vulcans absorbed their first loss of the season.

After a game at Bowie State, the Rams return to the Butcher Center to see conference rivals Indiana and Clarion on consecutive dates.

Indiana is to be played on Dec. 6 and then Clarion on Dec. 7.

Shepherd’s 2-0 conference record leads the early standings in the East Division of the PSAC.
