SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — Jefferson High School completed its 25-win regular season schedule, with a comfortable win over Pendleton County High School last week.
In the local six-team Sectional Tournament, the Cougars have been seeded No.1 and have drawn a bye when the event opened with Spring Mills High School visiting Martinsburg High School in the first game. Jefferson then played the winner of that game in what is a double-elimination format.
The Cougars completed their regular season with consecutive wins over Frankfort High School, Spring Mills and Pendleton County.
The only three losses were to Hedgesville High School, Morgantown High School and Martinsburg.
The Cougar pitching staff combined for nine shutouts and had seven more games where they allowed opponents only one run.
In the Sectional Tournament, the Cougars will have Jett Gross, Alex Danner, Andrew Engle and Liam Sager as the most-used starting pitchers from the regular season.
Gross finished an unbeaten season with a 7-0 record and a 0.66 earned run average. He struck out 60 batters in his 42.2 innings of work. Danner posted a 5-1 record and 1.87 earned run average. Engle finished with a 3-1 record and 0.83 earned run average. Sager also went 3-1 and had a 1.50 earned run average.
Cole Smith batted .439 and had six doubles. Sam Hefner scored a team-leading 31 runs, led the team with 19 stolen bases and batted .365.
Braeton Oviedo finished with a .324 batting average. Serf Guerra batted .314, had 22 RBIs and seven doubles. Liam Healey stole 18 bases, scored 20 runs and batted .306.
Jefferson’s record against local teams was 7-2 and it swept two games with both Musselman High School and Spring Mills. The Cougars beat Washington High School once and played another game against the Patriots that wasn’t completed. As mentioned, the two losses to local teams came against Martinsburg and Hedgesville.
No other team in the state’s Class AAAA ranks lost as few games as Jefferson.
Hurricane (21-5), George Washington (20-7), St. Albans (18-8), Morgantown (21-9), Spring Valley (21-11) and Wheeling Park (20-9) all lost at least five games.
The survivor of a group that includes Jefferson, Martinsburg and Spring Mills will advance to play the survivor of a group that includes Hedgesville, Washington and Musselman. The two survivors of the three-team groups will play each other in a best two-out-of-three series.
