SHEPHERDSTOWN — It took individual excellence to give the Cougars most of their prized moments at the West Virginia State Track and Field Meet that took place over two days in Charleston.
Hannah Phillips shone the brightest and left the most indelible impression, by winning both the 800 meters and 1600 meters distance races. She also ran a leg on the winning 4×400 relay unit and earned the second-most individual points in the season-ending meet. Joining Phillips on the first-place 4×400 relay were Avery Root, Sylvia Trevathan and Imani Wood.
Pole vaulter Samantha Ogden also won her specialty, adding 10 points to the Cougars team total of 47 points, which left them in fifth place in the team standings. Morgantown High School won the girl’s division with Huntington High School finishing in second place.
Sprinter Tony Allen gave the Cougars their lone first-place in the boy’s division, when he won the 200 meters. University High School from Morgantown won the boy’s division and Hurricane’s Redskins were in the second place, with the Cougars finishing in ninth place.
Both the boys and girls divisions were comprised of 18 events.

Neither of Jefferson’s teams had won the Class AAA, Region 2 Meet where Spring Mills High School topped the boys division and Musselman High School’s team depth carried it to the championship on the girls’ side.
The State Meet opened with trials and mostly preliminaries on Friday, at Laidley Field and then carried along on Saturday, through the morning and afternoon until the early evening, where relays completed the season-closing meet.
Morgantown’s girls team championship wasn’t assured until after the running of the last event, where a Mohicans relay team did enough to hold off the onrushing bid of the Highlanders girls from Huntington High School.
