SU men’s basketball announce recruiting class

Shepherd University head men’s basketball coach Justin Namolik announced today that six student-athletes have signed letters-of intent to play basketball for the Rams in 2013-14.

Garett Burkhead (Bel Air, MD/Patterson Mill High School), a 6-3 guard is a transfer from Mount Olive College. As a senior at Patterson Mill, he helped lead his team to an 21-4 record and the 2A regional championship game. He averaged 17.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.6 steals, and made 56 3 pointers. He is the all-time leader scorer at Patterson Mill with 1,249 points. He was named Upper Chesapeake Bay division first team and first team All-County by Aegis Newspaper.

Mitchell Koch (Kingwood, WV/Preston High School), a 6-3 guard, helped lead his team to an 18-5 record by averaging 14.6 points, 4.1 assists, and 7.5 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. He was a Big 10 Conference first team selection and WV AAA All-State honorable mention. He was also selected to play in the North-South All-Star Basketball Classic.

Naim Muhammad (Waldorf, MD/North Point High School), a 6-4 guard, helped lead his team to a 24-2 record and a third straight conference and 4A regional championship by averaging 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.7 steals. For his career, he scored over 1,000 points and grabbed over 500 rebounds and helped lead his team to a 74-5 three year varsity record and a 4A Maryland State Championship in 2011. He was a SMAC first team selection, Washington Post All-Met honorable mention, and Most Outstanding Player of the SMAC Senior All-Star Game.

Seth Myers (New Market, MD/Linganore High School), a 6-5 forward averaged 17 points and 7.7 rebounds. He was MVAL Piedmont Conference first team and second team All-Gazette in Frederick County. He was also selected to play in the Buffalo Wild Wings Roundball Classic.

Mike Reed (Abingdon, MD/Patterson Mill High School), a 6-4 forward averaged 13.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.2 steals. He was named Upper Chesapeake Bay division first team and an All-County selection by Aegis Newspaper.

Wade Walker (Cairnbrook, PA/Shade High School), a 6-5 forward helped lead his team to a 26-2 record, a district championship, and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the Pennsylvania state playoffs. He averaged 17.9 points and 13.0 rebounds and was selected to the Pennsylvania Class A All-State second team. For his career, he scored over 1,500 points and grabbed more than 1,000 rebounds.

In addition to these six student-athletes, Skyler Roman (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg High School), a 6-0 redshirt-freshman point guard will make his debut next season. Roman has fully recovered from a knee injury that forced him to miss his senior season. As a junior, he averaged 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals per game. He was a Mid Penn Conference 1st team selection, Harrisburg Patriot News Big 15 first team, Public Opinion Player of the Year, and a WHAG Fab 5 selection.

“I am excited about the potential of this recruiting class,” said Namolik. “We have some specific areas that we need to improve in and this class addresses those areas. My assistant coach, Eric Gabriel, coordinated our recruiting and worked very hard in making this class a reality.”
