Shepherd women lose MEC opener
Shepherd lost its first-round game in the Mountain East Conference women’s basketball tournament, falling on the road to Urbana, 102-84, to complete the Rams’ season.
Shepherd finished 4-23 overall while Urbana improved to 18-9 and moved to the MEC quarterfinals in Charleston.
DeVonyea Johnson had 25 points and Kate Francisco scored 24 points in Urbana’s win. Shepherd received 24 points and six assists from freshman Cara Mason and another 15 points and seven rebounds from junior Gabby Flinchum.
The MEC named Mason as its Freshman of the Year and placed Flinchum on its All-Conference second team.
On the men’s side, Shepherd senior guard Brantley Osborne was selected to a first-team All-Conference spot while junior center/forward Morgan McDonald and junior guard Austin Cunningham were given “honorable mention” notice.
The MEC placed eight players on its first-team list and another eight players on its second-team list. Only four players were named to the honorable mention list.
The Mountain East Conference has 12 teams and honored only 20 players on both the women’s and men’s All-Conference teams.
