Shepherd opens search for new head coaches

By Staff | Mar 28, 2014

Shepherd is conducting national searches for new head coaches in both women’s basketball and volleyball after not renewing the contracts of Antoinette “Toni” West and Sarah Smith.

West was named the head women’s basketball coach when former coach Melanie Ford moved to an assistant athletic director/compliance position at the school. West had been Ford’s assistant coach in the 2012-13 season and had been at Shepherd as an assistant before that.

In her one season as the Rams’ head coach, Shepherd had a 4-23 overall record that included a 4-18 regular season mark in the Mountain East Conference. The Rams lost in the first game of the conference tournament.

Smith had been Shepherd’s head volleyball coach since 2005. In her nine seasons coaching the Rams, her overall record was 129-159 (a .448 winning percentage). Last fall, Shepherd had a 15-17 overall record.

The Shepherd baseball team, now 14-7 overall and in first place in the Mountain East Conference with a 12-4 league record, is rated 10th in the Atlantic Region of the NCAA Division II ranks. The Rams have consecutive doubleheaders against conference rival Wheeling Jesuit scheduled for Fairfax Field on both Saturday and Sunday with the games slated to begin at 1 p.m. on both days.

Wheeling Jesuit has an 11-5 conference record.
