Shepherd calls three to Hall of Fame

By Staff | Aug 15, 2014

The Shepherd Athletic Hall of Fame has called three names to be the newest inductees to its honor roll.

Bringing the number in the Hall of Fame to 136 when they are inducted on October 10 at the annual banquet at the Clarion Hotel are baseball outfielder Mike Spry, former football coach Bob Haley and football defensive lineman Chris Field.

Spry held most of Shepherd’s hitting records until surpassed by All-America Nathan Minnich, whose exploits earned him the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year award in 2012.

Spry played from 2000-03 and was a two-time All-Region selection as well as an All-WVIAC performer. As a senior, he was named the Regional Player of the Year and placed on the second-team All-America squad.

Before Minnich’s epic Shepherd career, Spry held the school’s records in nine different offensive categories.

After his career was completed at Shepherd, Spry played in the independent Frontier League and even coached at Shepherd for several years.

Haley was an assistant coach for the Rams for 13 seasons, the last being from 1999-2010. He served as the defensive coordinator for 11 seasons while the Rams were winning seven WVIAC championships and entering the NCAA playoffs five different times.

While Coach Haley was with the nationally-ranked Rams his defense led the WVIAC in rushing defense five times and in total defense in four seasons.

A four-year player for Monte Cater’s Rams, Field’s career covered from 1997-2000. He was a three-time All-WVIAC selection, with two first-team seasons.

Shepherd won league titles in 1997, 1998 and 1999 while Field was a much-decorated defensive end.

The Rams were invited to two NCAA playoffs during Field’s career. As a senior team captain, Field led the team in sacks and tackles-for-lost-yardage for the second year. He finished his four-year stint as the school’s third all-time leader in sacks.

The yearly Hall of Fame banquet tickets are $35 each and can be purchased through the Shepherd Office of Advancement by phoning 304-876-5527 or 304-876-5524.

The three newest members of the Hall of Fame will also be introduced on-field at the Shepherd home football game on Oct. 11.
