McTavish leads Rams; Bane, McKinney have best games for women

And now for the hard part. After tripping both Glenville (100-70) and Virginia-Wise on the road (85-82) and falling 86-79 in Athens to Concord, Shepherd returns home to see two of the three Mountain East Conference leaders this week.

Wheeling Jesuit was at the Butcher Center last night and West Liberty faces the Rams on Saturday at 4 p.m.. Both those teams are nationally ranked. The Rams take an 11-9 record (6-8 in the league) against the two titans.

Ryan McTavish was Shepherd’s scoring leader in all three games last week. He tallied 24 points in the runaway win over Glenville, came back with 19 and 10 rebounds in the three-point win at Wise. And then scored 17 points in the close defeat in Athens against the Mountain Lions.

Naim Muhammad had 21 points and a career high 12 assists in the thrashing of Glenville, scored another 17 points at Wise and kept his double-figure scoring going with 13 points at Concord.

A.J. Carr pitched in 17 points (and took down 11 rebounds) against Glenville and added 14 points and 12 rebounds in the win at Wise. Skyler Roman scored 13 points at Wise and then notched 15 points and claimed nine rebounds at Concord.

The Shepherd women outran Glenville, 104-93, were no match for Virginia-Wise in a 102-63 loss in southwestern Virginia and then lost a close, 90-86, decision to Concord on the road.

The Rams were 5-13 overall and 4-10 in the Mountain East Conference following those three games.

Like their men counterparts, the women have dates against both Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty at the end of this week. Both the Cardinals and Hilltoppers are atop the women’s standings.

In the win over Glenville at the Butcher Center, Morgan Arden had 22 points. She also doled out 10 assists but was guilty of 13 turnovers. She scored 12 points in the rout at Wise and finished with a game-high 28 points at Concord. Cara Mason helped out with 20 points against Glenville, tossed in 20 at Wise and added 14 more points at Concord in that four-point loss.

Shepherd was outrebounded, 50-28, in its loss at Wise.

Liz Myers scored 16 points in the Glenville win and added another 15 points at Wise. Kristen Nunn tossed in 19 points against Glenville and scored 16 more against Concord.

Sammy Bane provided the Rams with 14 points against Glenville. Kari Lankford had a game-high nine rebounds at Wise. Elizabeth Moorman had a season-high eight rebounds at Concord, and Tiffany McKinney scored a season-high 15 points and claimed six rebounds in Athens against the Mountain Lions.

The women face West Liberty at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Butcher Center.
