Few surprises reach West Virginia state tournament
Huntington returns. Morgantown comes in as the only unbeaten team in the Class AAA field. And the usual yearly appearances of Martinsburg, Beckley Woodrow Wilson and Capital have come to be expected.
Finding Musselman, Parkersburg South and Hurricane in this year’s eight-team tournament field could be labeled as surprising.
Hurricane comes to Charleston with a losing record at 11-14 overall.
The first round games had Morgantown facing Hurricane, once-beaten Huntington meeting Musselman, Capital playing Parkersburg South and Woodrow Wilson seeing Martinsburg, a team that went 10-0 in the regular season against local competition and then swept through its Sectional and Regional without much difficulty.
Chapmanville and Ravens-wood are the only mild surprises in the Class AA field.
The Dots of Poca and always-powerful Bridgeport are seeded No. 1 and No. 2 in the Class AA tournament.
Rounding out the field are many-time entrants Fairmont Senior, Wyoming East, Robert C. Byrd and the Beavers of Bluefield.
The four first-round games featured Poca against Chapmanville, Bridgeport taking on Ravenswood, Fairmont Senior tackling Bluefield and Wyoming East playing Robert C. Byrd.
Magnolia High of New Martinsville holds the top seed in the Class A event.
About the only two teams not making an annual trip to Charleston are Fayetteville and St. Joseph’s Central Catholic.
Magnolia will see Fayetteville in the first round and the other games have Wheeling Central Catholic going against Parkersburg Catholic, Tug Valley meeting Tucker County and Clarksburg Notre Dame playing St. Joseph’s Central Catholic.
