Elon fell just like Oklahoma, Texas and Baylor had done in the Big 12 tournament.

West Virginia’s women’s team had beaten third-seeded Oklahoma, second-seeded Texas and top-seeded Baylor to win the Big 12 tournament championship.

By winning the conference tournament the Mountaineers gained an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

West Virginia received the No. 6-seed in the so-called Bridgeport Region and had a first-round game in College Park, Maryland.

The first opponent in College Park was Elon (North Carolina), a No. 11 seed.

With Tynice Martin scoring 32 points, the Mountaineers eased past Elon, 75-62, and moved along to play Maryland on its home court.

The third-seeded Terrapins came into the game with a 31-2 record and the Big 10 tournament title in hand.

After West Virginia managed a 16-10 lead in the first quarter, Maryland generated a second-quarter run that gave it the lead by halftime.

The Terrapins gradually increased their lead through the second half and pulled away to take an 83-56 win that moved them into the Sweet 16.

West Virginia’s season ended with a 24-11 overall record and its first Big 12 championship.
