Town council talks Shepherdstown Street Fest volunteer needs, police officer retirement
SHEPHERDSTOWN — June’s meeting in Town Hall for the Corporation of Shepherdstown Council began with an announcement from Racheal Meads and John Meeker. The couple said they are seeking volunteers to help during this year’s Shepherdstown Street Fest, taking place next Saturday, June 24.
Moving on with the meeting was the motion to approve the Second Reading To An Ordinance Re-Enacting Section 11-601 Of Chapter 6 Of Title 11 Of The Code Of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, To Define Types Of Refuse; Second Reading To An Ordinance Re-Enacting Section 11-604 Of Chapter 6 Of Title 11 Of The Code Of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, To Clarify County Landfill Entity; Second Reading To An Ordinance Re-Enacting Section 11-605 Of Chapter 6 Of Title 11 Of The Code Of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, To Clarify Tenant Responsibilities; Second Reading To An Ordinance Re-Enacting Section 11-606 Of Chapter 6 Of Title 11 Of The Code Of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, To Clarify Owner And Tenant Responsibilities; Second Reading To An Ordinance Re-Enacting Section 11-607a Of Chapter 6 Of Title 11 Of The Code Of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, To Revise Refuse Container Size And Material Requirements; Second Reading To An Ordinance Re-Enacting Section 11-608 Of Chapter 6 Of Title 11 Of The Code Of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, To Revise Refuse Storage Requirements; Second Reading To An Ordinance Re-Enacting Section 11-609 Of Chapter 6 Of Title 11 Of The Code Of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, To Clarify Permitting Entity; and First Reading To An Ordinance Re-Enacting Section 9-902 XIV, Entitled “Project Permit Fee Schedule” To Add A Fee For The Publication Of Legal Notices.
All were unanimously approved.
The Corporation of Shepherdstown’s new website was noted as still being in the works. A future, in-depth announcement will be made about where the progress is in the completion of the website, in about four weeks. As has been the case, the Corporation of Shepherdstown’s old website will continue to function for the foreseeable future.
The main discussion in the meeting was about bringing more publicity to Shepherdstown’s museum and visiting center.
“Some days we had 70, 80, 90 visitors and some not so much, so we need to get people in there. [P]eople are coming throughout the weekend and especially during the summer, [but] if you really want to learn more about Shepherdstown, you need to go to the museum,” Mayor Jim Auxer said.
As of now, the museum has limited hours during the weekends, but drawing more people to the Historic Shepherdstown Museum and Shepherdstown Visitors Center, as either volunteers or curious tourists, would ensure they learn why Shepherdstown is such a special place, both historically and geographically.
The town council meeting concluded with a reminder of the Fourth of July Parade and Community Picnic, beginning at 11 a.m. on July 4. As of the time of the meeting, 60 entrees had signed up for participation in the parade. The town council highly recommended community members attend the 12-3 p.m. picnic at Morgan’s Grove Park, as it is a wonderful opportunity to wind down with friends and family.
Officer Michael Moats was announced as planning to retire on July 12. His replacement will be announced next month.
