Cooper Raines McQuilkin

Cooper Raines McQuilkin, 92, formerly of Shepherds-town, died in the home of his cousins, JoAnn and Gary Cooper, of Harman, on Monday, Mar. 6, 2017. He had been a resident of their home for many years.

He was born at Rock Spring Farm on May 19, 1924, to the late Hisel Cooper McQuilkin and Franklin McQuilkin Sr.

He had farmed Rock Spring Farm for over 60 years. He was the last of his family and the fourth generation to farm Rock Spring. His great-grandfather, William Thomas McQuilkin, had bought the farm from the David Billmyer family for $7,000 in 1847.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Martinsburg, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was a member of West Virginia Farm Bureau for over 60 years.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a cousin, Franklin Staley Walper; brother, Franklin McQuilkin, who died in 1966; and his grandparents, Lucy Staley McQuilkin and Frank R. McQuilkin and Kenny and Stella Raines Cooper.

He is survived by a special friend, Lucille Waltz, of Shepherdstown. Also surviving are cousins, Linda C. Carter and Kevin Carter, of Shepherdstown; Delores Nicodemus, of Charles Town and several others.

A memorial service will be announced later.
