Dorcas M. Maye

Dorcas Maudann Tabler Maye, 94, of Summerfield, FL, passed away after a brief illness on July 30, 2022.

She was predeceased by Allison Grubbs Maye, her husband of 57 years, in 2006; a daughter, Elizabeth Irene Maye; and sister, Elizabeth Ellen Tabler Lemen. She is survived by three daughters, Kathryn Diane Lawson (Thomas Coyle); Jacqueline Paige Maye (William Godek); Susan Rebecca Maye (Gordon McVay); and grandchildren Brian Delaine Lawson (Christina Lawson); and Kara Paige Lawson.

Dorcas was born on Jan. 22, 1928 in Martinsburg, WV. She attended the one-room Tuscarora School through grade seven and graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1944. She spent two years at Shepherd College, WV, followed by a year at George Washington University where she became a Registered Laboratory Technician and met her future husband, Al Maye. Married in 1949, they moved to Hagerstown, MD, where they raised their daughters.

In 1962 they moved to Fountain Head and joined the Country Club where she and the family enjoyed golfing, swimming and dining. Supportive, patient and kind hearted, she encouraged her daughters to pursue their interests and faithfully attended many swim meets, horse shows and art exhibits as they grew up. In addition to being a loving wife and mother with a wonderful sense of humor, she loved to travel and flew extensively throughout the United States, Alaska, Canada and Mexico with her husband during his career as a pilot.

An avid genealogist, she was a member of the Conococheague Chapter of the Maryland DAR and was honored for 30 years of service in 2015. Her positions included Chapter Registrar, Chapter Regent and Vice Regent as well as State Chairman of the DAR magazine. In 1989 she was admitted to the National Society United States Daughters of 1812.

In 2016, she moved to Florida to live with her eldest daughter, Kathy, where she enjoyed warm winters and sunshine until her passing.

Funeral services will be held privately at the Rest Haven Funeral Home in Hagerstown, MD. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Breast Cancer Society.
