Patt L. (Corbin) Welsh
Patt L. (Corbin) Welsh Baker of THE BEST chocolate chip cookies and apple pie; lover of bees, lighthouses, and cats; one of the most dedicated women any of us has been privileged to know, and the last of her eight siblings…
Patt Louise (Corbin) Welsh, 82, passed in the care of Hospice on Friday, April 19th.
Patt was born Sept. 20, 1941 in West Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1962, she married Wally Welsh and moved to Kearneysville, WV where she raised her sons Wesley (Melissa) and James (Dawn) and fiercely loved her grandchildren Brandon, Kayla, and Sarah Grace and great grandsons Lionel and Lucian.
Patt was a graduate of Honey Creek High School, Vigo County, Indiana, class of 1959.
She was an active member of Grace Reformed United Church of Christ, GRUCC’s Women’s Guild, Jefferson County 4H, Jefferson County Relay for Life, a data entry volunteer at the George Tyler Moore Civil War Center, and she served many years as the art department chair and Building 5 supervisor for the Jefferson County Fair. She wrote as a community correspondent for the Spirit of Jefferson Farmer’s Advocate, The Martinsburg Journal, and the Shepherdstown Chronicle. Over the years, Patt was employed by Doubleday Books, the Corning plant, the bakery at Jefferson Orchards, and Shepherd University where she was a valued administrative assistant and loyal participant in a variety of campus activities until her retirement at the age of 75 after 27 years of service.
In 2005, Patt was honored by Governor Joe Manchin as a Distinguished Mountaineer for her years of service to her community and state. In 2009, Patt was recognized as an Outstanding 4H Alumni. She was recognized on several occasions for her leadership of Evergreen 4H Club.
Patt was proud of her family, but she was also extremely proud of the personal goals she set and accomplished for herself. As noted previously, Patt had a gift for baking, and for many years, she won awards from the Jefferson County Fair and the Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival for her baking efforts. In 2010, at the age of 69 and with her combined her years of work experience, community involvement, and lifelong interest in learning, Patt earned her Associate’s degree in Applied Sciences from Shepherd University and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. In 2023, at the age of 81, Patt had her first book of poetry published.
