SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — The raw wind and ever-chilly conditions seem to follow the calendar when the annual Jim Taylor Invitational Meet comes to the high school track and field season.
Last Saturday was no different, as both Jefferson High School boys and girls entertained another large group of teams in the 2024 Jim Taylor Invitational.
The Cougar boys topped the team field with 129 points, surpassing runner-up North Hagerstown High School’s 102 points. The Cougar girls were their stellar best in the sprints and relays and finished one-half point behind winning Parkersburg High School’s 114 points.
The most point-fulfilling of the boy’s events was the 100 meters where Keyshawn Robinson, Caleb Shelton and Tay’Shaun Roper finished 1-2-3. Robinson’s winning time was 11.11.
Relays, as they usually do, provided the Cougars with their greatest point results.

The Cougars used Tony Allen, Shelton, Roper and Robinson to win the 4×100 relay in a quick 43.17. The 4×200 relay went to the Jefferson foursome of Allen, Shelton, Roper and Azmani Jackson with a winning time of 1:32.53.
The Cougars had to settle for a second place in the 4×400, but returned to the winner’s circle in breezing fashion in the 4×800 with a time of 8:41.12 as compared with the runner-up’s 9:03.65. The Cougar foursome there was Shane Burkhardt, Conner Myers, Augustin Hall and Jackson.
Hurdler Jamal Mouchivedi placed third in the 110 high hurdles race and second in the 300 low hurdles event.
Distance man Reese Hickey was third in the 800 and fourth in the 1,600.
The shuttle hurdles relay unit was third and Nolan Meehleib was fifth in the discus to garner more valuable points.

Jefferson’s 113.5 girls’ points came from all around the track and in the field events as well.
Pole vaulter Samantha Ogden outclassed that field with winning leap of 9-foot-6.
Relays yielded their bounty to the Cougars. In the winning 4×100 it was Arayia Maiben, Imani Wood, Jayla Kidrick and Jazmyn Taylor doing the honors. The field-topping 4×200 relay had Maiben, Kidrick, Taylor and Wood again and the 4×400 unit was comprised for Kidrick, Wood, Sylvia Trevathan and Avery Root.
Taylor took the 100 in 13.04 and Wood had a win in the 200 in 26.68. Kidrick was fifth in the 200.
Trevathan finished second in the grueling 400 sprint, Peyton Thacker gained second-place points in the shot put and placed fourth in the discus. And Taylor garnered a second place in the long jump.

The 4×800 relay team got third-place points.
The weather was again a major factor, but the meet lent its weight to some impressive times, heights and distances for such an early-season event.
